What is oil pulling and should you be doing it?

Call me the ultimate influence-ee (if that's not a word, it is now 😂) but whenever I see something on TikTok or instagram that promises major health benefits, I have to try it.

Of course, I want to also do a little research on it first so I'm not just blindly trying something that could totally just be a trend.

But oil pulling has actually been around for centuries! It's a form of Ayurvedic medicine to help remove plaque from your teeth and boost the overall health of your teeth, gums and tongue. It's also supposed to rid your mouth of harmful toxins and get rid of bad breath 😷

All of this sounded amazing to me so I decided to try it. It's been a little over a week since I've started. Here is the pulling oil I got

Doing my research I noticed that there was mixed opinions on whether to do it at night or in the morning but the majority of sites I was reading said you should practice oil pulling in the morning, on an empty stomach so here's a step by step what I do:

  1. I take 1 tbsp of the pulling oil. Linked here again

  2. Swish the oil in my mouth being really careful not to swallow it

  3. I try swishing for 3-5 minutes (it's hard!!)

  4. To get the most benefit, they say you should work your way up to 20 minutes of swishing 😳

  5. When you're ready to spit, you have to spit in the garbage! Otherwise the oil can clog your drains which is no bueno

  6. After I do that, I brush my teeth and then I'm done!

I have a dentist appointment coming up at the end of next month so I'm very curious to see how this ancient practice helps my oral health and if my dentist will notice the difference!
